Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a class of cementitious composites with compressive strengths exceeding 120 MPa, water-to-binder ratios below 0.20, and dramatically improved durability against chloride ingress, freeze-thaw cycling, and abrasion. UHPC enables thinner structural sections, longer span bridges, blast-resistant facades, and architectural elements that are simply impossible with conventional concrete.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Definly Chemicals supplies UHPC-grade polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticizers engineered specifically for the extreme dispersion demands of ultra-low water-binder mixes containing silica fume, ground quartz, and steel fiber reinforcement.
Why UHPC Demands a Specialized PCE
Traditional naphthalene (SNF) superplasticizers cannot achieve the dispersion needed for w/b below 0.22 because their electrostatic repulsion mechanism breaks down when surface charge density saturates. PCE works through steric repulsion via long polyethylene glycol side chains, which continues to function at very high cement and silica fume concentrations.
However, not all PCE grades are UHPC-suitable. UHPC-grade PCE requires:
- High charge density — aggressive carboxyl group loading to overcome the high specific surface area of silica fume.
- Long, optimized side chains — typically TPEG or HPEG macromonomer with molecular weight 2,400 to 3,000 g/mol.
- Low chloride and alkali content — to preserve passivation of embedded steel fibers.
- Robustness to silica fume — consistent performance across batches with varying silica fume reactivity.

Typical UHPC Applications
- Bridge decks and overlays — thin UHPC overlays for rehabilitation of aging bridges.
- Precast architectural panels — thin facade panels with complex geometry and ultra-fine surface finish.
- Blast and ballistic protection — military and infrastructure hardening with steel-fiber-reinforced UHPC.
- Connection details in segmental construction — UHPC closure pours between precast elements.
- Long-span structural elements — pedestrian bridges, canopies, and signature structures.
Recommended Definly Products for UHPC
- PCE Superplasticizer (UHPC Grade) — the primary admixture.
- PCE Macromonomer (TPEG) — for in-house PCE blending.
- Sodium Gluconate — optional retarder for mass UHPC pours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What dosage of UHPC-grade PCE is typical?
UHPC mixes typically require 1.5% to 3.0% admixture by cement weight (equivalent to 0.6% to 1.2% PCE solids), substantially higher than conventional concrete. Trial mixes with your specific cement, silica fume, and quartz are essential.
Can SNF be used for UHPC?
Generally not. SNF cannot achieve the dispersion required at water-binder ratios below 0.22, and high SNF dosages introduce excessive sulfate and sodium that compromise UHPC durability.
Does Definly supply pre-mixed UHPC?
Definly supplies the admixture and raw materials. UHPC pre-mixes (cement + silica fume + sand + admixture) are not part of our product range; we work with engineering teams who formulate UHPC mixes from individual components for project-specific requirements.
